How Do I Fix My LCD or DLP TV?

Many people own either LCD or DLP TVs but some people might experience problems with their television during the time of ownership. Before you chuck out the television, make sure you're not experiencing an issue that you can easily solve.

What are Common Problems with LCD and DLP TVs?

LCD TVs may be one of the latest in television technology, but that doesn't mean that nothing goes wrong.

  • Ghosting is a problem with older LCD television models. This describes the phenomena that happen when the response time in an LCD tv isn't fast enough. As a result, a trail of light follows the movement of characters or objects on a television screen.
  • Higher refresh rates were installed in LCD television models to keep the refresh rate in the TV up to speed with the rates movies are filmed in. The problem is that this creates movements that look artificial on the screen.
  • If your screen's lights are dimmer in your DLP television than they used to be no matter how much you adjust the settings, then there is either a problem with your lamp bulbs or your ballast board.

What is an Electrical Ballast?

How do you know if the problem is your lamp bulbs or your ballast?

  • An electrical ballast is a device that keeps your bulbs from getting overcharged and burning out.
  • The ballast limits the voltage sent to the lamps in your television. The ballast board is an integral part of keeping the lamp bulbs from being overcharge and burning out.
  • If there's something wrong with your lamps but changing bulbs doesn't help, there's probably something wrong with the ballast board.
  • If you reset the lamp timer or you hear a clicking noise when you turn on the DLP TV, then you'll definitely need to replace the ballast.
  • Alternatively, if you still have many hours left on your lamps but they're still not working, then you should get a new ballast board.
