Chevrolet El Camino Tail Lights

Refer to the manual for any specialized technique necessary for your vehicle, but the general replacement instructions are given below. Tools you will need are a Phillips or blade screwdriver, a socket/ratchet set, and a wooden or plastic tool to pry the stud out of its socket if this is a captive stud/socket application. Using a metal tool will scratch the paint.

1. Unscrew the frame of the taillight enough to remove it after disconnecting the battery for safety. Threaded studs embedded in the taillight are one way to fasten the assembly, and another way is the captive stud/socket method. You will need a socket wrench set for this method.
2. Brush away any broken bits of bulb or taillight carefully.
3. Change the bulbs while youre replacing the taillights if you have not changed the bulbs in the last two years.
4. Save the fasteners for reuse if necessary.
5. Observe how the old part fits on your El Camino and make notes to properly fit in the new one.
6. Carefully place the new taillight before securing with screws, bolts, and nuts.
7. Hook up the battery again and test the new light.
