Seal Up Your Tank: STIHL String Trimmer Fuel Filler Caps

As spring quickly approaches, you may find that you need a gas cap replacement for your STIHL string trimmer. These petrol fuel filler caps often last for years, but you may eventually need a replacement. Fortunately, there are several OEM and aftermarket gas and oil caps. While yard work isn't all fun and games, tools like the string trimmer make the process much easier, and STIHL makes it easy to replace the cap when needed.

STIHL uses a few unique systems to ensure that you aren’t losing your fuel caps. Almost all of the STIHL caps, as well as any aftermarket gas and oil caps designed to work with STIHL products, incorporate a plastic wire and an anchoring system. These are often referred to as tethered gas caps. At the end of the rubber wire, there will usually be one of three different options. These include:

• Wishbone-Shaped – For wishbone-shaped end pieces, you simply squeeze the wider ends so that they fit easily into the gas tank of your string trimmer. Generally, this is the easier method.
• Circular – Gas caps with a circular end and anchor fit snug into the tank once you slide them in. These won’t fall out easily because of their rounded design.
• Unattached – Sometimes, you can find OEM or aftermarket fuel caps that don't have either end. For these, you can use your existing end piece or purchase one for your fuel cap. These typically snap into place.

With the STIHL Flip fuel cap, you can open the fuel compartment with just your hands. STIHL crafted this as a toolless fuel cap, so all you’ll have to do is flip up the round black portion, and this part will stand up. You can then turn the entire fuel cap using this as a handle so that you can open it with ease, even if your hands are sweating due to the season's warm weather. This prevents the needless damage to the fuel cap that can happen when you use modern tools like a screwdriver. Most STIHL products incorporate this technology, so you’ll seldom have to replace your petrol fuel filler caps due to damage.

Not all caps for the string trimmer use the Flip system. Instead, some use a simplified twist-on-and-off system and will have a raised area on the cap so that you can get an easy grip. In most cases, the grip section is contoured and ergonomic so that it’s easy to turn the cap and lock it firmly in place. This way, you don’t find yourself accidentally losing fuel as you trim your landscaping on a sunny spring day.

You don’t want to wrestle with your gas cap when you’re just trying to refuel your string trimmer. With some versions of this gas cap, ethanol in the tank caused the caps to swell and become more difficult to open. The most recent version of these gas caps do not have this issue and should be easy to twist on and twist off once you use the Flip system to unlock them.
