Rolex Submariner 168000

Also known as the "Triple Zero Rolex", the Ref 168000 is a rare model that Rolex only produced for less than a year between 1987 and 1988. It's part of the decades-long Submariner line that started in 1953. Considered a transitionary reference, the Ref 168000 also represents a turning point for the brand. From a design standpoint, it combines both vintage and modern design elements into one rare watch.

A Classic Dial

This Rolex Submariner watch has the iconic black dial. Accenting the glossy black background are off-white Tritium lumes. The luminous indexes appear as circles, rectangles, and a triangle. Each hour marker features a white gold outline. The same combination of materials appears on the hands. Like other Submariners, you also get the Mercedes-style hour hand.

A Classic Dial

This steel dive watch is a Submariner Date. There's a date window topped with a Cyclops magnifying lens at the 3 o'clock position. For the rest of the watch, Rolex uses sapphire crystal glass.

The Ref 168000 Steel Dive Watch Case

There aren't any major differences between the Ref 168000 and its immediate predecessor. However, it has one major change. It's the first Rolex to switch from 316L stainless steel to the higher grade and less corrosive 907L. Collectors consider the Ref 168000 an experimental watch or a "test reference" because Rolex moved to 907L for all other models after ceasing production of this one. The move made Rolex the first watchmaker to use 907L stainless steel.
