What is a netbook?They are a category of personal computers that debuted in 2007 and have since competed in the same niche as Chromebooks and larger tablets that can be paired with keyboards. They differ from full size laptops by omitting optical and floppy disc drives and having a limited number of connector ports. This simpler design allows them to be smaller than laptops and use less power. They can have screen sizes ranging from 5 to 12 inches, and they weigh as little as 2 pounds.
What are the features of a netbook?These are essentially miniature laptops with fewer hardware components to save space and energy consumption. Here are some of the basic features to evaluate when choosing one.
- Screen size: The screen size determines the size of the entire device and how convenient it is to use productivity software or multitask. It will also determine how large the keyboard will be.
- CPU: If performance is an issue, you will want to consider the CPU and check its benchmark score before buying.
- Memory: Netbooks do not need a large amount of RAM to use office and internet programs, but more memory may be beneficial if you plan on storing a large amount of items.
- Hard drive: This is an important feature to look at, because it determines how much software and data files you can have at one time. They do usually have USB ports so you can use USB sticks, but the hard drive will be faster when running software and accessing files.
- USB ports: The USB ports will be the main way of installing software or transferring data files physically without a network connection. USB will also be the way to connect most peripherals like a mouse or printer. Look at how many USB ports a netbook has and whether they are USB 2.0 or USB 1.0.
