How does the radiator cool the Isuzu NPR’s motor?Radiators act as a vehicles heat sink. The heat generated by internal combustion engines would quickly cause severe damage to them without a functioning cooling system. Coolant circulates through the engine and removes heat from it. The hot coolant then passes through the radiator and is cooled off.
The radiator consists of a network of small tubes with spaces between them to allow air to be blown through it. The tubes have metal fins on them to create more surface area for the air to blow across. The coolant circulates continuously from the engine to the radiator and back, being cooled by the radiator and heated again in the engine.
What maintenance does a radiator need to stay in condition?- Annual flush: The antifreeze in the cooling system builds up dirt and corrosion over time that can clog up the radiator’s tubes. Flushing the system out once a year and replacing it with clean antifreeze will prevent this.
- Topping off the overflow tank: Checking the overflow tank regularly and adding antifreeze as needed will ensure that enough coolant is in the system for the radiator to operate efficiently. It will also alert you to gradual leaks.
- Replacing cracked hoses: Major leaks can happen when the hoses connected to the radiator are allowed to go soft and crack. A slow leak can suddenly become a major one when they fail.
- Overheating: If the Isuzu NPR develops a pattern of overheating or running hotter than normal, it can be caused by several components of the cooling system. The radiator is one component that can cause these symptoms if it’s leaking coolant or has become seriously clogged.
- Leaking coolant: The most obvious case of leaking is when a hole develops in the radiator from physical damage or corrosion and a puddle forms under it. Steam escaping from the radiator while driving can also indicate damage has occurred. Note, however, that steam coming from the radiator cap is a sign of overheating. It’s designed to act as a release valve when the cooling system is under too much pressure.
- Dirty coolant: If the coolant becomes discolored or cloudy or it has specks and dirt, it should be flushed out and replaced with clean antifreeze. This amount of dirt can clog the Isuzu trucks radiator and other small spaces in the cooling system.
