Ford Escort Motor Mounts

Over the course of your Fords life many parts will have to be replaced due to everyday wear and tear. This doesn’t just apply to obvious parts like brakes and tires, but also to the very mounting hardware that holds your engine in place. If your Ford Escort vibrates more than it previously has or is it much louder when you’re driving, then you might have one or more failed motor mounts.

What are motor mounts?

The motor mounts are the pieces of hardware connecting your Ford Escort’s engine to its frame. The engine connects to the frame in a few spots located in the bottom of the engine bay. While there are a bunch of higher end models using liquid, air compression, or polyurethane, the vast majority of motor mounts are a solid piece of metal with a rubber sleeve. The ones on your Escort serve three specific tasks; they hold the engine in place, they reduce noise and vibration caused by the engine’s moving parts, and they prevent any misalignment between the engine and drivetrain.

What is the difference between OEM and aftermarket mounts?

Once you have decided that you need to change the motor mounts in your Ford Escort, you will need to choose between using replacement models from the Original Manufacturer Equipment, also referred to as OEM, or going with aftermarket parts. OEM models are made by Ford and are custom-fit to your Escorts model and year. Aftermarket motor mounts come from different third-party companies and are mass-produced to fit not only your specific Escort but also vehicles that are similar in design. But that doesn’t mean that aftermarket models are inferior or won’t work as well as OEM mounts. Additionally, there may be different kinds of aftermarket options that Ford doesn’t make. It’s in your interest to shop around and compare all the different OEM and aftermarket models to see which option suits your particular needs.

How do you replace the motor mounts?
  1. The first thing to do is make sure that there is nothing obstructing the clearance between the engine of your Ford Escort and the frame. Make sure all hoses, belts, wires, and lines can clear the frame without getting caught and snagged. Then, place the jack underneath the engine and raise it until they touch. Place a couple blocks of wood between them to help stabilize the engine.
  2. Loosen up the mounting bolts with a ratchet and extension piece, then get underneath your Escort and remove all the mount-to-frame bolts.
  3. Slowly lift the motor of your Ford Escort until you can reach in and remove the mounts. Examine both old and new ones to make sure they are a match, then put in the new ones.
  4. Rethread the mount-to-frame bolts and slowly lower the motor until everything is in alignment. Tighten down the mount-to-frame bolts, then tighten down the mounting bolts, and you are done.
