LGA 771 CPU Fan With Heatsink

CPU cooling fan and heatsink kits for the Intel LGA 771 socket come in a wide variety of styles and performance profiles, depending on how much heat is being generated by your system. Overclocked processors like Intel's Xeon chips often generate more heat than stock coolers can dissipate, which is why there are aftermarket upgrade kits to replace them.

Central processor units (CPUs) generate too much heat to operate without a cooling system. The standard cooling system that the industry has adopted places an air-cooled heatsink directly over the CPU and mounts a cooling fan on top of the heatsink to create a continuous air flow through its vanes. The heatsink typically consists of an aluminum plate with many thin vanes on top of it to shunt heat away from the CPU. The heatsink makes direct contact with the top of the CPU using a thermal adhesive that conducts heat into the heatsink.

Because the LGA 771 socket is designed to fit high-performance CPUs, there are several designs that have been developed over the years to maximize the efficiency of a passive heatsink. Some designs mount two heatsinks vertically with a cooling fan sandwiched between them. Others mount a vertical heatsink with a fan on its side. There are even water-cooled heatsinks that can be installed for overclocked CPUs that generate more heat than an air-cooled heatsink can handle.

Stock Intel heatsinks are installed by applying thermal adhesive to the processor if needed and then inserting the heatsink's four push-pins into the holes provided on the motherboard until they click into place. Aftermarket kits typically use a vertical heatsink that mounts onto the motherboard with a bracket or screws into the four mounting holes used by the stock Intel heatsink. Check the instructions provided by the manufacturer. In both cases, once the heatsink is mounted, the cooling fan should be mounted if it's not already and plugged it into the CPU fan's power header on the motherboard.

Cooling fans are modular components that can be removed from the heatsink, unplugged from the motherboard, and replaced with another fan of the same size and airflow capacity. Be sure to consult your heatsink's manufacturer for information on a proper replacement for the cooling fan.
