Jordan Legacy 312: A Sneaker With a 312 Area Code

Jordan Legacy

The number most associated with Michael Jordan is the 23 displayed on his Chicago Bulls jersey for 13 seasons. So, what's with this style's "312" moniker? It's one of Chicago's area codes — a further indication, along with the word "Legacy," that this sneaker is a celebration of Jordan's enduring legend, rooted in the Windy City. The first iteration of these shoes resulted from a collaboration between the Jordan Brand and celebrated streetwear designer Don C., a Chicago native.

The 2018 release of the Jordan Legacy 312 wasn't uneventful. Unauthorized pictures of an early version of the shoe leaked and were promptly ridiculed on social media and sneaker blogs, prompting the designer to "counter-leak" other images. These pics were designer-approved but were just as unauthorized, and the Jordan Brand made it clear it wasn't happy about this turn of events. But all's well that ends well — with its old-school design and eye-catching colorways, the Jordan Legacy 312 was a hit.

Noteworthy Colorways and Collectibility of the Jordan Legacy 312

One of the Jordan Legacy 312's debut colorways, the Ghost Green (AQ4160-301), is also one of the most successful on the secondary market. In January 2021, these sneakers were listed on eBay for around $185, slightly above their original MSRP of $160. Contrasting with the sneaker's nostalgic lines, its vivid color scheme is anything but retro. The leather upper is a light shade of neon green, enhanced by elephant print accents and a crisp white Swoosh. The look has a fresh, sunny vibe. The Storm Blue (AQ4160-104) colorway was also part of the Jordan Legacy 312's initial offerings. It features deep blue color-blocking alongside a touch of elephant print and sold on eBay in the ballpark of $180 in March 2021.

Jordan Legacy

The name "Michael Jordan" inspires such awe that it's odd to think there was a time when he was an untested rookie — albeit one who quickly made his mark, winning the Rookie of the Year trophy in 1985. On that occasion, he wore a light brown outfit, to which the Jordan Legacy 312 Rookie of the Year (AV3922-102) colorway pays tribute. The sneaker's white upper features tawny suede panels for a luxe touch. In early 2021, the Jordan Legacy 312 Rookie of the Year could be found on eBay listed in the $100 to $170 range.

Since the shoe was inspired by Chicago, it's impossible not to mention the Jordan Legacy 312 Low's Chicago colorway (CD7069-106), which dropped in 2019. It shows off the colors of the Chicago Bulls, namely black and fiery bright red. The color-blocking, black midfoot strap and elephant print wrapping around the heel create a vintage look that's intensely reminiscent of the 1980s. Its resale value is typically close to its MSRP of $140.

1980s Nostalgia Meets Modern Streetwear

The lines of the Jordan Legacy 312 are definitely retro. The sneaker's design, enhanced by contrasting overlays and a bold midfoot strap, is reminiscent of the Air Jordan 1, Air Jordan 3 and Nike Air Alpha Force Low — sneakers Michael Jordan was partial to in the 1980s. While the Jordan Legacy 312 eventually got released in a low version, it originally came as an old-school high-top.

Despite these nods to the history of Jordan footwear, the Jordan Legacy 312 is proudly fashion-forward. It was always targeted to Jordan sneakerheads and style-driven shoppers rather than athletes seeking top-notch performance on the court. That's why its creation was entrusted to a streetwear designer with serious trendsetting credentials and hip hop connections. It's also why it was offered in vibrant, innovative colorways from the get-go.

Jordan Joins the Lakers

The Lakers aren't exactly the first team that comes to mind when you think of Michael Jordan or the Jordan Brand. MJ is famous for playing for the Chicago Bulls, and while the Los Angeles Lakers aren't the Bulls' archrivals, you wouldn't call them buddies either. Yet the Jordan Legacy 312 celebrated the "purple and gold" Californian team with two different iterations. The Jordan Legacy 312 Lakers colorway (AV3922-157), which dropped in 2018, features a crisp white leather upper enhanced by neon purple accents. A note of yellow in the heel section of the midsole completes the tribute to the Lakers. The resale value of the Jordan Legacy 312 Lakers is close to its original MSRP of $150.

The following year saw the release of the Jordan Legacy 312 Low Lakers (CD7069-102), which has more of a streetwear vibe than its predecessor. The white leather upper features elephant print panels, a black Swoosh and a black midfoot strap adorned with yellow NIKE lettering. The purple on this sneaker isn't as bright as its counterpart, and it appears only around the heel. The resale value of the Jordan Legacy 312 Low Lakers version can be found close to its MSRP of $140.
