Providing Power for Your Truck: Detroit Diesel Parts
Sunny and warm weather is often used by professionals to do work on their property and on the property of others. When you’re going to be using heavy equipment like tractors, trucks, and skid-steer loaders, it’s a good idea to keep up with their maintenance. Detroit Diesel has multiple options for diesel engine parts so that you can keep your equipment running each spring through fall for years to come.
Is there a difference between mounted and unmounted bearings? Some of the most critical Detroit engine parts are the bearings, which can be found throughout the engine and hydraulic systems of just about any piece of heavy equipment. When you’re in the market for these Detroit diesel parts, you might notice that they come in unmounted and mounted varieties, but what’s the difference?
With mounted bearings, the bearing is housed in another component that’s usually bolted into the equipment. These are sometimes called housed bearings or rolling-element bearings because of this particular design. This helps eliminate the need for the special housings needed for other types of bearings and can also be called pillow blocks, take-up units, and cylindrical cartridges. Unmounted bearings are just the bearing and don't have a housing. This means you can attach the bearing to a drive shaft directly.
What’s the difference between diesel camshafts and standard ones? All modern combustion engines use camshafts to open and close the valves on top of each engine’s cylinders. The valves themselves have two functions: one set draws in combustible air and fuel for ignition, and the other type releases any excess exhaust gasses. Camshafts used in diesel engines work similarly to standard camshafts, except they can be found in either the head of the engine or in the top of the block that runs down the cylinder bank's side. Additionally, diesel camshafts have a slightly different shaping than traditional ones.
How can you tell your camshaft is wearing down?As a general rule, replacing your worn-out camshaft can help restore torque and horsepower to your engine. This, of course, is very important in heavy equipment that you want to last for many more spring days. These Detroit diesel engine parts are even responsible for your vehicle’s fuel economy. A worn-down camshaft can directly reduce the timing on your valves by as much as three degrees, and having precise timing of the valves is one of the most important aspects of engine health. Here’s how to tell your camshaft is showing its age:
- Your engine isn’t getting as much overall horsepower as it once did. You need power to do heavy work, so this sign is easy to notice.
- Your camshaft appears to no longer be straight. When your camshaft bends over time, it simply won’t operate correctly, and your valve timing will be off.
- There are signs of pitting on the lobes. Like traditional camshafts, diesel camshafts are comprised of lobes. Wear and pitting on the lobes will cause your engine to lose horsepower and efficiency.
- Problems in the lifters and lowers will also indicate a new camshaft is needed. The lifters and lowers move the camshaft, so when chips develop or there’s damage to the body of the camshaft, this is a major indication that the camshaft is experiencing excessive movement.
Any rotation happening in the engine is a direct result of the camshaft bearings, which are also common Detroit diesel parts. These support the camshaft in the engine and directly allow it to rotate. Most modern-day camshaft bearings are made of aluminum, and these come in three design variations. These include:
- Overhead valve design
- Overhead camshaft design with rocker arms
- Overhead camshaft design with direct cam operation
