Choosing RAM for Your Computer

RAM is an integral part of a computer. With the right amount of RAM, your PC's performance and its ability to support your software and games is optimized. Basically, the more RAM your CPU has access to, the faster your computer will be, so when it comes to choosing a computer RAM, you might want to know what to get and why.

What is DDR3 RAM?

DDR3 stands for "double data rate type 3" and is a type of synchronous dynamic random-access memory (SDRAM) with data transfer rates of up to 6400 MBps. The modules are unbuffered meaning there is no register between the DRAM and your system's memory controller. This results in a direct access to the motherboard making the memory more efficient than buffered or registered ones.

What Is the Difference between DDR3 and DDR2?

DDR2 and DDR3 are improvements on the same technology. However, while similar, they do have some differences.

  • Data transfer speed: The DDR3 offers twice the data transfer speed of the DDR2. The former provides 8 data transfers per cycle a double increase from the 4 offered by the latter. This translates to data transfer speeds of 6400 Mbps for DDR3 and 3200 Mbps for DDR2.
  • Power consumption: DDR3-1600 has a 1.5 supply voltage compared to 1.8 Volts for DDR2. This makes the DDR3-1600 more energy efficient resulting in longer life in laptop batteries.

Keep in mind that the two modules are not interchangeable. To upgrade from a DDR2 to a DDR3 you will also need to upgrade your motherboard.

What Are the Main Features of G.Skill DDR3 SDRAM?

  • Compatibility: The overall performance of your computer determines itself by how well your CPU and RAM work together. The DIMM DDR3 sticks are highly compatible and are universally supported by many motherboards including Intel and AMD systems and even processors that are not officially designated to use it. In addition, G.Skill DDR3 RAMs support the Intel XMP standard developed for the Intel platform.
  • Performance: Designed for PC enthusiasts, the DDR3 Ripjaw series delivers a powerful performance for all computer users. Running at 1600 MHz CL9, the DDR3 8 GB dual channel kit is a great choice for gaming and running heavy applications.
  • Design: The modules are quite colorful and are available in different colors. Both sides of the memory sticks are identical with end featuring a striking teeth-like or comb-like outline. The sticks also come with an improved thermal design keeping them cooler.

If you are looking for an 8 GB kit with low-latency and top-level speeds, then you might want to consider the Ripjaws.
