If the unit is too small, it will not fully cool the area. If it is too big, you could waste energy.

• Amount of sunlight: If the room is sunny, increase the number of BTUs by 10%.
• Amount of shade: If the window is shaded, decrease the number of BTUs by 10%.
• Number of regular occupants: If there are more than two occupants in the room on a regular basis, add 600 BTUs per person.
• The type of room: If the air conditioner will be used in the kitchen, increase the number by 4,000 BTUs.

• Wall-mounted units: Because it does not sit in the window, a wall-mounted unit does not prevent you from using your window. It does not have to be removed from the window or anywhere else during cold weather. Further, it is sealed permanently, preventing air from leaking in or out.
