Screens to Keep Your Sidekick in Top Shape

Out of your electronics, your smartphone is your true sidekick. It allows you to talk to family, see cute pictures of kittens, and converse with the world. You interact with your phone through the touch screen, which is ironically the most delicate component of your phone. More often than not, youll need a sturdy case or cover in case it slips from your hands or out of your pocket. On phones like the HTC 10, these screen replacements are possible, but the work requires some research, a little dexterity, and patience.

What Are Key Features of the HTC 10?

  • 2016 Flagship: It is the brands flagship phone offering for 2016 and features Android 6.0 Marshmallow out of the box. It has a tactile power button with ridges on the surface for easy control and has Optical Image Stabilization (OIS) in the rear and front cameras. It has a high screen-to-body ratio that emphasizes its 1440 x 2560-pixel display
  • Improved Internals: The camera has a 12 MP sensor and is capable of taking clear and vibrant low-light shots. The OIS feature also reduces blurring in images by physically compensating for the micro-movements of your hands. Moreover, the Hi-Resolution Audio DAC and a feature-packed headset amplifier work in tandem to deliver an audiophile-grade listening experience.
  • Expandable Storage: Aside from the 32 GB or 64 GB internal storage, you also have the option to further expand storage capacity for up to 256 GB of additional storage. This is more than enough to have a sizeable media, photo, and video collection all in the palm of your hands.

What Tools Do I Need for This Job?

  • Nylon Spudger: A plastic spudger is necessary for detaching the delicate ribbon cables without accidentally scratching the board or any other part of the circuitry.
  • Angled Tweezers: Tweezers are ideal for removing the tape and other components that have been stuck to the midframe with adhesive.
  • Heat Gun: A heat gun softens the adhesive that sticks the LCD screen onto the midframe. Use only for short intervals so as not to damage your new one upon reassembly.

How Do I Replace the LCD Screen?

  • Detach Screen: Heat the LCD screens edges, gently pry it with a precision knife, and stick a guitar pick underneath to keep it lifted. Proceed until youve removed it. Be careful not to damage the ribbon cables of the home button. The screen will still be attached to the main board.
  • Disassemble Midframe: Remove the 12 screws to reveal the midframe, and detach the battery cable and the signal antenna. Remove the tape covering the screen ribbon cable.
  • Detach Ribbon Cable: Pull the screen away by gently pulling the ribbon cable out through the hole in the edge. Replace the double-sided tape around the edges, put in the screen replacement, and reverse the disassembly process.
