CPU Fans

Most parts of your computer require cooling equipment to function at optimal levels and nowhere is this truer than the CPU. The processor handles all the data exchanges that you do on a daily basis. A dedicated fan is an important cooling consideration for your processor because long hours of use cause it to work very hard and generate much heat as a result. Intel, Cooler Master, and DEEPCOOL are just a few of the brands that offer such products.

How do CPU fans work?

The CPU cooler operates as a cooling device for the brains of your computer, so it is a good idea to know how one works. Cooling fans come in various sizes and typically attach directly to the top of the CPU. These coolers include heat sinks in their cases forged from aluminum or copper parts. As CPU components generate heat, the heat sinks draw that hot air away from the sensitive parts while pushing cooler air towards them, thus cooling the sensitive components.

How do you choose an appropriate fan?

The two primary considerations you will need to keep in mind before choosing a CPU cooler are the size and speed of the device. Size here refers to the overall dimensions of the case, and you will typically find these in ranges of 60 millimeters to 120 millimeters. Most CPU casings have unused space to install one or more of these fans as necessary. Bigger fans produce more airflow and are a good option for gaming computers.

A multi-speed CPU fan can also cover other parts of your PC as well, such as your motherboard or graphics card. You should choose the fan size and speed that works for you but keep in mind that not all products that are cooling fans are designed for a CPU.

How do you install a CPU fan?

The first thing you need to know before you begin the installation of your CPU cooler is that it is important to maintain positive air pressure during the process. Doing so will help prevent dust and debris from clogging up your system both before and after the job. Check to make sure the power to your PC or laptop is completely off before you begin. Place the device in its proper mounting position so that the holes for the screws align with the holes for the case. Hold the fan in place with one hand while you secure it to the computer case with the other, using a screwdriver. Lastly, attach the CPU cooler to an appropriate header. The headers are keyed for your convenience, so simply attach the 3-pin cooler to the 3-pin header.
