Speakers and Subwoofers

Whether you are setting up a home theater system or getting ready to play a show, a speaker system can provide you with the means of bolstering the audio from any device that is hooked up to it. The Bose 2.1 System speakers and subwoofers can come with Bluetooth, wireless, or wired connections. These speaker systems are available in a wide array of different shapes and sizes, from small round speakers to large rectangular systems.

What are the different types of speakers?

There are several different speaker types, including:

  • Bookshelf: This type of speaker is meant to rest on a table, shelf, or similar elevated surface. It is usually around 12-18 inches tall and can be fitted into a bookshelf as the name implies.
  • Floor-standing tower: This speaker system is designed to be situated on the floor. They are usually at least several feet tall.
  • Subwoofer: This is a type of loudspeaker component that can be either passive or powered and is meant to reproduce low bass frequencies. The standard frequency range for subwoofers extends from 20-200 Hz.

  • In-ceiling: These are speakers that can be installed into walls or ceilings. They are typically small in size and are usually designed for single-room usage. These units come with tweeters that can be rotated.
What are the different subwoofer types?

A subwoofer may be either passive or powered:

  • Passive: This Bose subwoofer type must be powered by an external amplifier in order for the audio to be heard. Each passive subwoofer comes with a different power requirement that the amplifier will need for sound to be produced at an audible level.
  • Powered: This is a type of subwoofer wherein an amplifier is included within the subwoofer casing in order to bolster the sound waves from the device. These systems require a single cable connection from a surround sound preamp or home theater receiver.
What does RMS power refer to?

The RMS power rating refers to the amount of power that a speaker can handle. This power is listed in wattage, with higher numbers indicating that the unit can handle a higher amount of power. The RMS number mainly refers to how much power one of these systems can handle on a continuous basis, which means that most units can handle intermittent bursts of higher power. The available RMS power with these 2.1 systems ranges from around 50 watts to upwards of 500 watts.
