Expand Your Digital Library With Barnes & Noble NOOK Tablets

The NOOK is an Android-based, tablet-size e-reader and media player. Created by the bookseller Barnes & Noble, the NOOK fuses together the functionality of a tablet and that of a digital book reader. It gives you a convenient way to manage your entire digital book and media collection wherever you go.

What is the NOOK tablet?

NOOK refers specifically to the line of Barnes & Noble tablets released in 2012. It was preceded by the NOOK Color and followed by the NOOK HD series and the NOOK Tablet 7. The NOOK Tablet 7 is similar in concept to the original tablet, but it features more powerful hardware and runs on the Android 6.0 operating system. The original device is basically an e-reader with some extended tablet functionality, but it lacks the full feature set of a normal tablet. For example, it has no camera or cellular capabilities.

What are some features of the NOOK device?

There are two versions of the tablet. One has 8GB of internal storage space as well as 512MB of RAM. The other has 16GB of internal storage space and comes with a full 1GB of RAM. This second version will allow you to save more files to the device itself, and it can run more apps and load more files at the same time. Apart from these differences, both versions of the NOOK are equipped with the following features:

  • A dual-core 1 GHz processor.
  • A 7-inch, multitouch VividView display with a resolution of 1024 x 600 pixels.
  • A microSDHC slot for up to 32GB of additional storage.
  • Wi-Fi connectivity.

The VividView display is designed to improve visibility in direct sunlight without compromising on power consumption. The data from the on-screen image is constantly collected and analyzed to correct for tone, saturation, contrast, and brightness.

See the manufacturer site for details.

Which file formats does the NOOK tablet support?

The tablet supports common digital e-reader file formats such as EPUB, PDF, and CBZ. It can also read numerous document files, including DOC, DOCX, TXT, and XLS, as well as most standard audio, video, and image file formats.

Which operating system does the NOOK tablet run on?

The NOOK runs on the Android 2.3 operating system, nicknamed Gingerbread. Compared to previous versions of Android, Gingerbread introduces more efficient power use and faster text input and editing. However, the NOOK does not have the full functionality of a typical Android-based tablet. The user interface itself is heavily modified to resemble that of a digital book reader, so it will run only preloaded Barnes & Noble apps.
