Revive Your iPhone 5c With a New Battery

When the battery in your Apple iPhone 5c reaches the end of its life, it can seem like you need to buy a new iPhone since you can't easily replace it. It is possible to do, however, with a replacement battery and the right tools. Here are some tips to guide you through the process.

What are the signs that an iPhone's battery is failing?

Lithium-ion batteries, like the ones used in iPhones, have a lifespan measured in recharges. As it reaches the maximum number of recharges, the battery will begin to lose its ability to hold a charge. You'll notice that it doesn't seem to recharge fully or that it discharges faster than it did in the past. Eventually, you'll have to keep your iPhone plugged into a power supply at all times to use it.

What do you need to replace an iPhone's battery?

With the right tools and patience, most people who have some experience with electronics can replace an iPhone's internal battery. You may need to purchase a battery replacement kit that includes the necessary tools if you don't already have them. Here's a list of the items you'll need:

  • iPhone 5c replacement lithium-ion battery
  • Phillips-head #000 screwdriver
  • P2 pentalobe screwdriver for iPhones
  • Spudger
  • Tweezers
  • iSclack
  • Suction handle or cup
How is the iPhone 5c's battery replaced?

Battery replacement kits will include detailed instructions. The following is an outline of the general process:

  • Step 1: Power off your iPhone and remove the two screws near the lightning connector.
  • Step 2: Use the iSclack or a suction device and a spudger to pull the screen out of the phone's case.
  • Step 3: The battery has a cable that plugs into the motherboard. Remove the two screws fastening the battery connector bracket and set the bracket and screws aside. Then pop the battery connector out with the flat end of a spudger.
  • Step 4: Free the cable bracket by removing the four screws holding it, and set it aside. Then pop off the three cable connectors with a spudger. Set the display assembly aside.
  • Step 5: Lift the adhesive strip tab holding the battery using the sharp end of a spudger. Cut the strip in half at the tab's middle and pull it away from both sides of the battery.
  • Step 6: Take out the old battery and replace it with the new one using a new adhesive strip.
  • Step 7: Reassemble your iPhone by following these steps in reverse.
